Ethiopia's power sector is being rebuilt and extended at the same time. Generation is dominated by hydropower with a growing push into solar, wind and geothermal; the harder constraint is not generation but everything downstream of it — transmission corridors, substations, and the distribution network that decides whether an industrial park actually gets reliable supply.

Procurement runs mainly through Ethiopian Electric Power and Ethiopian Electric Utility, with a large share of the bankable work financed by the World Bank, the African Development Bank and bilateral lenders. That matters more than it sounds: donor-funded packages follow international procurement rules a foreign contractor already understands, while purely domestic packages follow national procedure and reward a local presence.

The recurring mistake is treating an award as the finish line. Customs clearance for equipment, foreign-exchange access for imported components, and site coordination across regional authorities are where schedules actually slip.
